Christians are in the world, but not of the world. What does that mean?
In the election season, it does mean we do have a civic duty to participate in the election process as a responsible citizen. So get out to vote! Jesus readily spoke of our civic duty (not in the context of voting of course) in the Gospels.
As we fulfill our civic responsibilities, we are also reminded that we, after all, are not of the world. We leave the election results to the Lord’s hand. The presidential and congressional candidates are not saviors and certainly not our ultimate hope in this world or that which is to come. The present political hierarchy is not the fulfillment of His kingdom, which even his own closest disciples were mistaken before the passion of Christ.
Political regimes come and go, they are at best perishable, but His kingdom everlasting. And He shall reign as the only true King, the Lord over all, who alone is sovereign.
